Why we began

Engineering software has always carried a difficult responsibility: turn decisions about a physical product into a precise model that other people can inspect, change, document, and eventually manufacture.

For decades, that work was organized around powerful desktop applications and transferred files. The model was precise, but the wider project often became fragmented. Product data lived on individual machines. Reviews happened through exported copies and screenshots. Versions were reconstructed from filenames. People outside the CAD workstation waited for another handoff before they could take part.

Zixel began in 2020 with a different starting point. Instead of treating cloud access and collaboration as services added after modeling, the company set out to build 3D engineering software around browser access, connected product data, and a continuing project context.

That direction first appeared across digital-twin and 3D collaboration products. It then developed into a mechanical design platform, cloud-native CAD, product-data workflows, and AI-assisted engineering. zCAD brings that work into an international product brand focused on two current modeling products: zCAD Online and zCAD AI.

The purpose has remained consistent. A useful engineering model should not become isolated the moment another person needs to review it, and a new interaction method should not remove the structure that makes CAD valuable.

A company name rooted in representing the physical world

Founder and CEO Gong Minyan came to the company after years of work in industrial software. The Chinese name Ziqian was inspired by the painter Zhan Ziqian, whose work represented an expansive natural scene within the limits of a physical surface.

For the founding team, that idea offered a useful parallel to industrial software: represent the physical world in a digital form precise enough to understand, communicate, and act on. The company first applied that direction to digital twins and 3D collaboration, then carried it into cloud-native mechanical design and AI-assisted CAD.

The international zCAD name is more direct, but the underlying ambition remains connected to the same problem—how to turn knowledge about physical products into digital engineering models that can continue through real work.

An R&D-led team

Industrial software requires sustained technical work. Geometry must remain stable under change. Large product structures must remain usable. Data must move between authoring, review, and downstream workflows without losing its meaning. AI must produce results that engineers can inspect rather than accept on appearance alone.

According to Zixel’s official company information, 70% of the organization works in research and development, and 50% of the team holds a master’s or doctoral degree.     2020 / Zixel was founded

    The company began its work in cloud-native 3D engineering and industrial software.

    2021 / Digital-twin products entered enterprise use

    Zixel launched a digital-twin product that served more than 20 enterprises. This work developed experience in bringing complex 3D data into connected operational environments.

    2022 / Engineering work expanded across industries

    Zixel entered automotive, aerospace, and high-tech sectors and reported serving more than 50 clients. The product work moved closer to the requirements of manufacturing organizations: large data, cross-team review, controlled access, and continuing change.

    2023 / A 3D mechanical design platform reached broader use

    Zixel launched a 3D mechanical design platform that served more than 100,000 users. In the same year, members of the cloud CAD team joined the OpenGeometry expert community to contribute to work around cloud geometry kernels.

    2025 / AI-native 3D CAD became a product milestone

    Zixel officially launched its AI-native 3D CAD product direction. The company also worked with industrial-software partner Gstarsoft on a cloud-native 3D CAD offering that brought together parts, assemblies, drawings, product data, process content, and AI-assisted workflows.

    Together, these milestones show how work in connected 3D data, industrial collaboration, cloud geometry, mechanical design, and AI developed into the engineering foundation behind zCAD.

Geometry that can continue through change

CAD is valuable because the model represents more than visible form. Dimensions, constraints, features, references, and assembly relationships give a change somewhere to begin and make its effect easier to inspect.
